Private Spinning Lessons – Deposit

Deposit is non-refundable in the case of a cancellation with less than 7 days notice or no-show. Lessons may be rescheduled with 48 hours notice and the deposit transferred. 

You will receive an email with instructions for paying the balance which may vary by course. 

Classes are hosted by Olives and Bananas Fibre Arts at 49 S. Cumberland St., Thunder Bay Ontario.

KNOW YOUR WHEEL

Have you purchased or been given a wheel and are struggling to get it going? Need help troubleshooting your wheel to make it work smoothly? Want to learn how to change the settings to spin different types of yarns?

This is a class for those who own a spinning wheel who would like one on one help getting started or improving their basic skills.

Bring your wheel in and I will help you adjust it and work with you on whatever areas you need.

Length of class: 1.5 hours

Fee: $50 + supplies (to be purchased at start of lesson at Olives & Bananas)

Skill level: any

Equipment needed: your own spinning wheel

Optional equipment: any other accessories you’d like to learn to use. A lazy kate will be helpful but not necessary.

 

ADULT BUILD A SPINDLE AND LEARN TO SPIN  

Build your own top whorl drop spindle, then learn how to use it to turn fibre into yarn! The spindle is yours to keep and use after the class to continue your spinning adventure. This is a great, budget-friendly way to learn a new craft.

Students will learn: 

-how twist adds strength to fibre and transforms it into yarn 

-categories and types of fibre and how to choose fibres for spinning, including examples to see and feel  

-how to spin a single and ply a worsted 2 and 3 ply yarn, and what to do if you don’t want to ply!  

-how to control the thickness of your yarns 

-how to set and care for your yarns 

-ideas for projects to make with your first yarns 

Length of class: 1.5 hours

Fee: $50 plus materials (to be purchased at Olives & Bananas at start of lesson)

Experience level: beginner (no experience necessary)

Equipment needed: none

 

BUILD A SPINDLE AND LEARN TO SPIN FOR CHILDREN 

Learn how to build your own drop spindle, then use it to turn fibre into yarn!

Students will learn: 

-what spinning is and what yarn is used for 

-how twist adds strength to fibre and transforms it into yarn 

-where fibre comes from, and see and touch a variety of fibres used to create yarn. 

Students will build a basic spindle from the materials supplied and will use it to create a single ply yarn.

Length of class: 1.5 hours

Fee: $50 plus materials (to be purchased at Olives & Bananas at start of lesson)

Experience level: beginner *Best suited to children 6 years+

Prerequisites: none

Equipment needed: none

Parents may attend with their child to observe.

 

LOCKSPINNING

Jump into the exciting world of working with locks! In this course you will learn to:

-spin a variety of traditional and textured yarns directly from the lock (lock spun, tail spun, from the cloud, extreme tailspun, coreless core)

-learn how to modify the yarns by plying

-gather ideas on what to make with textured yarns and how to work with them

-learn tips on how to source, buy, wash, and separate locks

Length of class: 1.5 hours

Fee: $75 including materials

Equipment needed:

-spinning wheel

-jumbo or art flyer if you have it (you can do most of the course without it but parts will be difficult)

-spare bobbins

-lazy kate

*a spinning wheel can be provided but you’re best with the wheel you’re comfortable with

Experience level: novice/intermediate to advanced

Prerequisites: be comfortable spinning and plying on your wheel

 

ART YARN BASICS

Learn corespinning techniques, add ins, and textured plying to create unique and artistic yarns.

-double and single core corespinning

-add in beads, flowers, and locks with a variety of methods

-spiral ply

-autowrap

Length of class: 1.5 hours

Fee: $85 including materials

Equipment needed:

-spinning wheel

-jumbo or art flyer if you have it (you can do most of the course without it but parts will be difficult)

-spare bobbins

-lazy kate

*a spinning wheel can be provided but you’re best with the wheel you’re comfortable with

Experience level: novice/intermediate to advanced

GROUP LESSONS

Fee: Flat rate of $250 plus $5 per student for materials.
